Artist Description
I am a retired US Navy officer (and physician) and, after retiring from the US Veterans Health Administration in 2023, decided to try painting, something I had never done before. In 1981, the ship I was deployed on was making a transit from Papua New Guinea to Northeast Australia. During the transit, we passed through the Louisiade Archipelago before entering the northern Coral Sea. I was struck by the beauty of the many hundreds of islands, large and small, as we cruised through the archipelago. I have tried to depict that scene, as best as I can remember, in my painting. The flowers in the foreground evoke the work’s title, a parody of the name of the actual Coral Sea.
