Artist Description
I retired as a physician in 2023 and started painting with acrylics then. Six months ago, after taking a course at our local community college, I started using watercolor. I am fascinated by the various techniques one can use to create a composition. This painting is based on a photograph I took of a Bird of Paradise plant, which lends itself to the work’s title. Aside from the waxed finish, I have used techniques of crinkled Saran Wrap in the upper background, coarse salt in the lower leaf area and the flower base, along with sparse application of gouache in a few areas.
