Jess

Jeanne May

I start each piece with an acrylic under painting. This allows me to get a lot of information down on the canvas quickly and allows me to make changes to color or composition easily. Then I go in with the oil paints. I paint mostly allá prima and add some glazing layers towards the end if needed for depth.

This is a painting of my son’s girlfriend Jess. I loved the photo and knew immediately I wanted to paint it. I was intrigued by her expression. Was she sad, contemplative, annoyed, bored? I feel all these emotions are appropriate for birthdays. The passing of time is a reality check for us all and birthday celebrations often result in unexpected feelings. At the end of the day Jess had a great birthday but in this exact moment what went through her mind?
