Artist Description

This abstract has a big drama-meets-energy vibe.  It feels larger than its actual size.  I wasn’t planning to paint a juxtaposition, but that was certainly the result.  I love how the many layers are visible in the top layer.  Because I paint intuitively, I assess the emotional quality of my paintings when they’re finished.  What I think is fascinating about this painting is the use of the bright yellow.  Usually, that color is associated with cowardice.  But when I look at it, it feels courageous and confident.  Maybe it’s because the yellow isn’t tentative and covers almost half the painting.  I also feel a sense of vulnerability when I look at this painting.  The drips on the right side are important; like emotion finally being allowed to show strength with visible cracks.  I think it’s cool that although the canvas is dominated by dark values, I walk away from it feeling encouraged rather than burdened.  That emotional reversal is one of this painting’s greatest strengths.
