The inspiration for this piece started with a bird, specifically a turkey vulture. Turkey vultures are carrion birds, meaning they feed on dead animals. I often see these where I live and years ago I had the idea of a bird feeding on a woman laying on the ground. By the time I developed this idea into a painting, I had switched from a vulture to a crow, which are also carrion eaters. Because crows appear at times of death they are often seen as spiritual messengers. I liked the idea of portraying death as peaceful, the woman having a serene expression rather than fear, and the crow acting as a guide to the other side.
