Artist Description

A certain kind of magic exists in childhood—the kind found on warm summer evenings at twilight when bits of magic light flash across the yard. This painting was inspired by memories of catching that magic light. Earlier this summer, I was reminded of this magic one evening while working in my yard when I caught a glimpse of this slow, pulsing golden magic. This glow filled me with memories of glee, wonder, and laughter.

Created in acrylic on 16” x 20” canvas, “Catching Magic” reflects the beauty and innocence of warm summer nights running barefoot through the grass. Through splashes of yellow against the dark evening, I tried to capture not only the lightning bugs but the feelings they evoke—a beautiful reminder of childhood.

I am Julia A. Potter, a self taught artist who recently retired after a career in education. In retirement, I have embraced painting as a way to get lost in thought and in the process. This piece reflects my belief that art has the power to preserve beauty and memories.
