Unfinished Expression

Donald Medley

The piece, “Unfinished Expression”, holds a sense of becoming. The subject’s face is fully rendered in oil pastel. Moving away from the face, the viewer witnesses a looser application of the media along with suggestive lines that imply the planning of the rest of the subject. The viewer can see the artist’s process as he decides the finalized expression of the subject. However, the final state of the piece is potential for how the subject can be expressed. The background furthers this with the abstract watercolor highlighted with oil pastel in a way that tries to bring it to some kind of representation.

This piece features a watercolor gradient/patterns with hints of oil pastels emphasizing the shapes of the background. The subject is rendered in oil pastel.
