Lost Souls

Jane Couch-Osmelowski

“Lost Souls” is a result of overwhelming feelings during and after the pandemic. I studied crowns and realized that they often honor and commemorate occasions. Culturally, crowns can project dignity, power, superior abilities, authority and beauty. I wanted this crown to express respect and memory of those lost.

This piece is a wheel thrown and altered mid-range clay that has been fired three times at different temperatures. After throwing the basic form, I carved and sculpted the clay, adding and subtracting as needed. I glazed with mid-range glaze and then fired once again for the final gold glaze (at a lower temperature).
