This painting explores how religion affects black women. My paintings are inspired by the theories of Cubism, Kandinsky, and Lois Mailou Jones. This ten-piece series is highlighted by these four pieces exploring health, religion, work, and western history. These artworks helped me work through my thoughts and interactions with the performative aspects of western society’s interactions with black women. By presenting the duality of the black woman’s experience by displaying who she is vs how she is seen by society. With this series I want the audiences to understand that black women are multifaceted and shouldn’t be limited based on myths.
