Woodland Waterfall

Katherine Hutchinson

This is a fused glass piece.   It required multiple firings in the kiln. First to create each individual stone I layered glass to shape the stones.  I was able to use a  torch to give the tree trunks a natural look.  After the individual components were created, the entire piece was fired multiple times with each firing being a little cooler.  Some of the last layers we’re various colors of frit (small bits of glass) that I used to emulate leaves.   This allowed some areas to have a smooth finish, while others are quite textured.  My firing temperatures ranged from fifteen hundred degrees fahrenheit to thirteen hundred and fifty degrees. It is sized so that it could be used as a backsplash.

I was inspired to do this piece when I found the glass that reminded me of flowing water. I love doing landscape designs in glass.  It is often quite a challenge to create the elements that give the illusion of depth and shadow.  But it is a challenge I love to attempt.
