Artist Description

This image was taken at Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens, Columbia SC. The flamingos always draw a crowd. I initially focused on close-ups of their feathers, tucked heads, and groupings of several – that stark contrast of coral pink and black never fails. After shifting my location, I was fortunate to catch several at the waters’ edge. My initial plan was for a shot with the subject and their reflection. Once I started working in the digital darkroom I kept being drawn to this one flamingo’s reflection that was so much more compelling than the double image I’d envisioned. The bubbles at the water’s surface as the bird drank cemented it for me and I cropped out the live bird, kept the reflection.
