This piece was created from a spectacular maple log that contained both burl and spalted wood. Stress or injury to a tree causes the wood to regrow: this damaged area results in a dense, nonlinear, swirling grain pattern. Dark streaks and lines in this wood is created by a fungus that has invaded the dead tree. I was able to have a very small opening at the top of the vessel by hollowing through the bottom.
