I love watching blue herons. They have been a subject of a number of pieces of my artwork. I have painted them in standard watercolor. They have been the subject of fused glass pieces that have been included in lanterns, so it just seemed natural to create a painting with this batik method. They always seem to be such patient watchers.
The Watcher
Katherine Hutchinson
This painting is a watercolor batik on ginwashi rice paper. Just as fabric batik is a wax resist process, so is watercolor batik. This was painted in layers with wax resist, applied as each layer was added.
The rice paper adds a unique texture to the subject.
