Inspired by the infamous The Girl with the Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, my self-portrait , The Girl with the Piercings, introduces the conversation of how non-European Americans have been excluded as subjects within historical iconic works of art. While the original Vermeer painting displays a European woman, I decided to paint myself, a Black woman, to show the impact and importance of representation for other races within art and the art history America presents in education.
