This photograph is part of my series “Gullah Geechee Sunflowa”, a visual tribute to the modern-day Gullah Geechee woman imagined as a Sunflower Goddess that is divine and rooted onto nature. I capture the offering of a single sunflower placed near the edge of the ocean to signify giving back to the land and calling across waters to the ancestors who endured and transcended unimaginable circumstances.
The sunflower, known for its ability to follow the sun, becomes a metaphor for our journey of remembrance, growth, and spiritual alignment. Placing it by the shoreline is an intentional ancestral gesture of giving back to the earth and the waters that have carried both our pain and our power.
This photo is a prayer about inheriting a legacy carried through soil, salt, and soul.
