Vibrant flowers reach restlessly toward a distant, hazy sun in Sun Trumpet.
This is from my Dancing with the Algorithm series in which I explore taking photos with my iPhone 13 mini using the iOS native panoramic photo function. I enjoy the painterly and liquid effects created by using this 21st century camera in an unintended way.
I shoot panoramic photos, but with a twist. I move. As I shift the camera from place to place and pick what I want to appear in a photograph, the panoramic algorithm works behind the scenes to make sense of the jumble of images I throw in front of the lens.
It tries to stitch them together.
I try to make the algorithm bend to my will.
I have found, however, that it has a will of its own.
And so we dance while making pictures.
The surprises that show up as we dance around the lens are the most exciting part of making these photopaintings.
The iPhone digital photo file has not been manipulated in any way.
