I’m inspired by nature and the wildlife that lives in the mountains of Western North Carolina, where I reside. I love bringing animals to life in fabric, and balancing a sense of realism with the abstract and a touch of whimsy. My original plan when I envisioned this piece was to create a more monochromatic look. However, after I completed the buck, I felt he needed to be on a darker background to stand out. The background fabric I chose makes him appear to be emerging from the woods, and captures the mood I was aiming for. The background was created using strips of fabric that I artfully arranged to achieve the look I wanted. I love his steely gaze, which I created by shading his eyes with colored pencil, fabric markers, and paint.
