Medium Description

Anodized Titanium — An electrochemical process in which controlled current is applied to titanium, forming an oxide layer on the metal's surface. The voltage determines the thickness of this layer, which produces color through light interference. This process is combined with traditional hand engraving techniques to form a novel method of working with the medium. While anodizing is commonly used in industry, its application as a medium for representational fine art is essentially unexplored.

Artist Description

This piece depicts a singular rhododendron covered in dew rendered on a raw titanium background, with every color produced by the metal
itself — no paint, pigment, or dye is used. This work features proprietary
anodizing techniques developed by the artist through a South Carolina Arts
Commission grant, which supported the first comprehensive study of anodized
titanium as a fine art medium.
