I created this piece in honor of the women of the Revolution and the 250th anniversary of signing the Declaration of Independence. While creating this piece I listened to podcasts and audiobooks about the women of the revolutionary war. I chose to create an American flag to honor the legend of Betsy Ross. I collaged bits of fabric, lace, and sewing trims to represent the work of the women. I also used bits of book pages to represent the letters sent between women and their husbands, family, and friends. You will also find shapes of birds collaged throughout the piece. The birds represent the quote, “Women hold up half the sky,” which is attributed to former Chinese leader Mao Zedong and meant to imply women are just as strong as men. The title comes from a letter written by Abigail Adams to her husband, John Adams, reminding him to give women independence as well.
“I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If perticuliarcare and attention is not paid to the Laidies we are determined to foment a Rebelion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.”
~Abigail Adams
