Creating whimsical flower and garden illustrations with pen and watercolors is my passion. I typically sketch the flowers, paint them with Windsor-Newton watercolors, and use a Faber-Castell or Micron pen for the linework to finish the illustration. I’ve recently begun to experiment with Beam paints to create muted watercolor backgrounds that allow the pen-drawn flowers to stand out against the background. Playful Garden represents this convergence of whimsical flowers with the dreamy feel of the Beam paints. Combining “Salish Sea,” “Wintry Sky,” “Ultra Gray,” and touches of “Gold,” the background suggests earth and sky with a garden in full bloom.
Playful Garden

Playful Garden is a whimsical piece comprised of Beam watercolors painted wet-on-wet on Canson XL 9×12, 140 lb. watercolor paper. Once dry, I added the flowers with a Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen Fineliner in Black 199, size 0.5, and then highlighted with a Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen Brush in Black 199.
