This painting is Part 3 to my series called “The Unraveling Series”. It is apart of a series that is continuing and based off of emotions. It opens up the conversation to mental health in the black community. The black community represented through the hair, done by alcohol marker. The skull, used to symbolize a deep level of exposure to what is going on inside the mind is uncomfortable to many people to look at but has open the door to that conversation. On the outside, the unraveling face shows a woman yelling and her head, which is a balloon that has popped. The goal of this piece was to display emotional immaturity. I use the balloon as the head to show how those who are emotionally immature tend to blow up out of emotion instead of properly controlling them. I use the colors pink and yellow as a symbol for that emotion. The background, still inspired by Kehinde Wiley, though is not as intricate portrays flowers that are symbolic and aid in the meaning of the whole thing. The first flower is the “Buttercup” flower which can symbolize immaturity. The second flower which is the “Daisy”, also symbolizes immaturity and represents childish things. The flowers are positioned and show that they popped out of the balloon. The hair in this piece also contains hair beads to represent that immaturity as well. Every corner of this piece is painted to immerse the subject into the emotion and the audience into what they are seeing.
