This small tray is one of my “functional sculptures” with an emphasis on social and environmental issues. For me, our coastline is a source of memories with family and friends, gatherings, meals and connections made. It is also a place of awe and beauty, worthy of environmental protections. I create these simple pieces to remind others of this beauty of color and form of natural found objects and of special memories with others.
Oyster shell tray
Jane Couch-Osmelowski
This small tray was hand built with Kota porcelain clay and glazed with a satin matte white glaze. I used a hand built form to create the curve of the slab. The handles were formed from ceramic oyster shell molds that I made from shells found near the coast and painted with underglaze to achieve the blend of color found on natural shells. This is fired at cone 6, a midrange electric firing.
