This painting features native magnolia growing in a forest in Columbia, South Carolina. The artist created layers of oil paint on yupo paper using a variety of tools inlcuing plastic card, palette knife, and Asian paint brushes used in sumi-e painting. Inspired by the bold lines used in sumi-e, the white magnolia petals were created with thick, fluid oil paint on a large brush. Smaller brushes were used for the finer detail of the stamens.
