No Means No, SIR

Kendrick Holley Creations

This piece was created by first using multiple layers of acrylic paint on the back of the frame’s glass to ensure a smooth background color. We then broke a recycled wine bottle and meticulously placed the wine bottle pieces on the front of the frame’s glass. We further placed a medication bottle, pills, hospital bands, an IUD, and recreations of journal entries throughout the piece. We then carefully mixed and poured epoxy resin over the various items and background area. Finally, we used a flame over the entire surface area to both prevent and minimize air bubbles in the epoxy resin.

A native of Patrick County, Virginia, Melanie Kendrick Holley left her career as an attorney in 2024 to focus on her true passion: art. A native of Danville, Virginia, Dr. Landon J. Dr. and Mrs. Holley primarily focus on creating custom pieces of art for fellow bourbon lovers, but also regularly donate pieces to raise money for local charities.

No Means No, SIR was created for sexual assault awareness. Every detail of the piece tells Mrs. Holley’s personal story as a survivor of sexual assault. The broken wine bottle represents the year (2020) that Mrs. Holley was sexually assaulted, as well as the fact that she had a couple of glasses of wine that night. The medication bottle and pills represent the Klonopin that Mrs. Holley was prescribed because she struggled with panic attacks following the assault. The hospital bands and IUD represent how Mrs. Holley had a copper IUD inserted within 5 days following the assault in order to prevent pregnancy. However, the IUD was misplaced and lodged into her uterine muscle wall, which ultimately had to be surgically removed. The journal entries throughout the piece are recreations of quotes from Mrs. Holley’s journal entries from the days following the assault. Finally, the teal background represents the official color for sexual assault awareness. Creating this piece was quite therapeutic for Mrs. Holley and she hopes that the piece will not only help combat victim-blaming in our society, but help other survivors of sexual assault know that they are not alone.
