Negative Space is a deeply personal painting. It is a portrait of myself as I faced a breast cancer diagnosis and double mastectomy surgery. Each element in the painting tells a story. For brevity’s sake, I will only share a few. The mastectomy was needed to save my life, which made me feel like an entrapped animal forced to chew off a limb to survive. The light switch is my personal view of death with the invasive plant coiled around it ready to flip the switch. And the broken mirror was included to suggest the shattered but also personally reflective state I was in as I underwent this life threatening ordeal.
