In the Spotlight

Becky Hyatt Rickenbaker

I do field work to observe wildlife and collect painting reference. This 24″x 30″ acrylic painting of a snowy egret is the result of a trip to Cypress Wetlands in Port Royal, SC. The light was magnificent and the birds in the rookery scooted in and out of it creating moments of being caught in the “spotlight.”

Recognizing and translating to canvas candid moments in nature promises us something better; a rebirth of our spirit. When light plays a role in that moment, it lends itself to an even deeper level of inspiration and understanding.

Natural places and wild creatures, specifically birds, intrigue me the most. As a painter, the process of choosing subject matter is as involved and fulfilling as the painting itself. I enjoy the excitement of that process, and ultimately, the creation of the vision.

A native of Summerville, South Carolina, I now paint from my studio located at 80SIX Gallery in Tryon, North Carolina. Acrylic is my preferred medium.
