Cotton fabrics are manipulated to create a third dimension that casts shadows across the surface of the broken-up ice after a spring thaw. “Break-up” is an event observed by many northern cultures in various ways, because the power of ice coming down the river is both exhilarating and terrifying. Our cabin in the Adirondacks sees this every spring, as chunks of ice are thrown up on the riverbanks, into the trees, and occasionally refreezes into a hectic, jagged landscape of white and grey. Beading enhances the sparkles seen on ice and snow in the sun. A reminder of the transient nature of water in its various forms.
