W.E.B. DuBois termed the concept of “double consciousness” as Black individuals forcing themselves adapt to society’s perceptions.  These perceptions lead to frustration and internal conflict because assimilation is presumed.  Traditionally, some elements of Black Culture have been considered improper, which places Black Individuals in a complex and contradictory situation.  The white paint is symbolic of the pressure to conform.  This is a visual representation of the dual identities and exasperation of trying to remain authentic to oneself.
