Artist Description
This artwork is a mixed-media collage.
The subject is a pink dogwood tree. The background branches and bloom are painted in watercolor. The branches are darker and less detailed to give the appearance of depth. The foreground branches and open blooms are drawn in colored pencil The two main branches are bright and full of detail. Three of the bright pink open blooms are reaching toward the viewer, while the fourth is turned away peeking off the edge of the drawing. The composition was drawn from slightly under the branches looking up into a brilliant North Carolina blue sky.
This beautiful dogwood represents my grandmother’s tree. My grandparents planted this tree when my mother was a small child and our family enjoyed watching it grow over the years. As a young child, I would sit in the tree playing hide and seek with my sister or just watching cars go by and listening to the song birds going about their daily lives. My grandmother loved this tree and spent many hours watching her children, grandchildren, squirrels, and birds play in its branches. Pink dogwood trees always remind me of home.
