This painting was created at the Edisto Artist Guild Plein
Air Paint Out event in October 2023. It was my first three day competition with stamped
boards and strict rules so I wanted to use a non-traditional media. It rained
most of the time, so I painted in my car one day, on the porch another day and
the last day was spent at the state park while dodging rain drops in the
parking lot. The dense trees and plants are literally woven together so the
velvety, matte consistency along with flexibility to paint over quickly made
gouache and casein a good choice, although not immune to rain drops. My graphic
design background seems to show on this one as pattern and shape replaced trees
and palms.
