“Divinity” is a simple narrative painting depicting someone being visited by an angel, but within the dark depths of the ocean. The piece was inspired by one of my favorite animals, the naked sea angel, or clione limacina, due to its adorable yet occasionally unsettling nature. To play on the name of “sea angel,” I decided to combine it with the Christian angel, Ophanim, giving it halos of eyes and fluffy wings, as well as a massive eye inside their heads. The piece depicts one of these sea angels revealing itself to a tardigrade floating about in the ocean, and bathing it in a beam of light while other sea angels swim around them. It also incorporates a mostly blue and orange color scheme, as those are the main colors of the sea angel, but also because it provides high contrast. Theses elements aim to create a feeling of both beauty and unease, as well as a bizarre situation that creates more questions than answers.
