Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing something that has been broken. A teacup or vase is repaired with gold in the cracks, making it more valuable and more beautiful for having been broken.

Childhood trauma, abuse, or neglect can take our entire lives to comprehend and to heal. It is amazing how much damage a cruel or careless word can cause and how it can linger for the rest of our lives. I wanted this “shatter” to seem like a rock just missed hitting her. This child looks out on the world through a broken gaze. But she will survive. The good news is that we can get back a sense of child-like wonder even as adults.
