Having lived in Japan as a child, I developed a lifelong love for cherry trees. For many years I’ve driven to Washington DC, arriving at the title basin at sunrise to see the cherry blossoms in all their glory. This year, unable to see them in person I created “Beneath the Sakura Sky” as a tribute, a way to hold onto their beauty and the quiet joy they bring me.
Beneath the Sakura Sky
Beckie Willows
This piece was created primarily with powdered glass that I mix into a medium, allowing me to “paint” with glass. The glowing red moon is made from hand cut fusing glass, while each blossom and bud is individually formed from powdered glass and delicately placed along the branches. The water below was built with three distinct colors of glass powder, layered and blended to show depth and quiet movement.
