Beneath the Murmur of Distant Shores

Selene Santos

Beneath the Murmur of Distant Shores is a thoughtfully
composed fabric artwork that captures the subtle energy of natural
transformation. Warm hues of red, orange, gold, and burgundy flow across the
surface in interwoven, abstract shapes that suggest layers shifting and
settling over time. The use of varied textures—from smooth marbling to tactile
metallic sheens and speckled details—creates a nuanced visual rhythm,
encouraging the eye to move gently through the composition.

This piece evokes the quiet persistence of geological
processes, inviting reflection on what lies beneath the surface and the
delicate forces shaping the world around us. Through its dynamic yet balanced
forms, the artwork offers a sense of movement and stillness working in harmony,
underscoring how change and continuity coexist. The choice to work in fabric
brings an added dimension of warmth and tactility, enhancing the connection
between material and meaning. Overall, the work presents a measured exploration
of natural layers, drawing viewers into an experience that is both grounded and
expansive.

I’m a
textile artist who is inspired by the world around me, especially by nature. I
look at my surroundings with inquisitive eyes and mind, with curiosity, knowing
there are hidden treasures to be found and turned into art.

My art is my
attempt to recreate the beauty of the world with fabric, a journey I started as
I was searching for a way to channel my creative side into something I would
enjoy.  This has become so much bigger
than I expected. It has opened my eyes to a new level of appreciation for the
beautiful world around me.  It has also
challenged me to learn new skills, to expand my creativity, to discover talents
I did not know I had.

My artistic
approach is mostly intuitive with a constant awareness of color combination and
contrast.  The use of strong colors is a
direct influence of my Brazilian heritage. Using fabric as the medium to create
my art pieces was a natural choice since I have been working with them since my
teenage years.

The creative
process usually starts with visualizing the piece in my mind. The second phase
is transforming what I visualized into actual artwork. It requires selecting
fabrics as close as possible to my vision, adjusting, and sometimes, starting
all over again.  It is a process that
involves many steps from beginning to completion.

I learn
something new with each piece that I create.
It is an interesting and fulfilling process that I enjoy and look
forward to every day.
