This piece is incredibly experimental for me. Normally, I get my themes from mythology, the occult, stories, or various religions, but for this piece, I actually wanted my viewers to feel something. As a result, the themes I pulled out for the creation of this piece are based more on my personal pain rather than the stories of old.
While I would like the viewer to make their own interpretations, the aspects are based off of my struggle with epilepsy. Unfortunately for me, I’m semi-conscious during these episodes and they are painful and terrifying.
The namesake is named after the precursor to a seizure, an Aura.
The dagger is pointed at the base of my spine, and the brain jaggedly connects there because I get headaches that go from behind my eyeballs to the back of my neck. I’ve given myself bloodshot eyeballs on more than one occasion. The tongue is exaggerated to how swollen it feels in these times, and both it and the brain are purple, as it is the color for epilepsy awareness.
The various colors, lights, and shadows are the closest interpretation to display colors that don’t exist that dance around the room. The shadow are more blotted and solid in some places compared to others, much like they are in my vision. The “frame” sways as vertigo and dizziness set in. geometric line work is in the background to add to the confusion. Aware, but not comprehensible.
Finally the text in the background is a literary version, doubled in some places, tripled in others. Completely clear some places, undecipherable elsewhere. The text itself shows how the level of rational thinking taper off into complete instinct fueled by fear.
