Toby was an ambition. A desire to create something to max out my kiln and explore the possibilities of building big with slabs. Each section was built from flat clay sheets, then assembled into the vertical form. Next, details were added – screws, bands, textures, etc. to give Toby his true personality. The final form was stained with oxides and underglazes, then wood-fired for 36 hours in an anagama style wood kiln. The heat and ash flashed the surface with a variety of tones which could not have otherwise been obtained.
