Artist Description

“Holly Working”

Holly came to the US from Vietnam as a child without knowing any English. At this point she is a citizen, speaks English and owns her own nail salon. She has a family, and once a week she competes as a high level table tennis player. Her life is full and rich. As is the case with contacts within our community, Holly and I have gotten to know each other rather well.

As I sat on the huge recliner-massage chair having my toenails painted, and as I looked below, my eyes saw a wonderful composition of patterns and shapes that captivated me! I took a photo and decided to paint the scene.

Composition is what excites my eyes and pushes me to paint. And, whatever I choose to paint, there is a personal angle to the subject matter.

At my most recent appointment with Holly, as we awaited this year’s July 4th celebration, we talked about why we love this country. It was a moving moment for me, and my painting is a reminder.
