In this series of paintings, Spirit of Place, I explore the idea of land, memory, and connection through expressive, abstracted landscapes. Content or mood is conveyed through quick and deliberate brushstrokes, expressive lines, bold colors, and implied light.
Variations of light are used to reinforce mood, symbolizing a spiritual connection to place, referring to its distinctive or cherished aspects, or can reference the intangible energy and/or Spirit of a place (or soul). The landscape imagery, referencing spirit, memory, and passage of time is meant to be both haunting and celebratory.
Spirit of Place: Lowcountry Storm
Nancy O'Dell-Keim
This piece is oil paint on canvas. I typically begin process with oil bars and pigment sticks, repeatedly drawing and then wiping pigment away until I find the composition. Often my works are formed by many layers because of the emphasis on process and the evolution of the composition.
