Pearl of Great price is a mixed-media piece consisting of a watercolor, gouache, black lava, embroidery, and beadwork on velvet. The use of traditional feminine craft subverts expectations of “women’s work” through symbolism and feminist themes.

Pearl of Great Price challenges hypocritical and harmful teachings of modern fundamentalism, particularly concerning the expectations and treatment of women. This piece references a biblical parable regarding a merchant who exchanges everything he owns for a singular pearl of greater value as a simile for the Kingdom of Heaven. In fundamental religions, women are taught that their virtue and expected procreation are of higher worth than any other contributions, and thusly warrant the abandonment of all other pursuits. Similar to the way an irritant produces a beautiful pearl, this concept frequently and falsely promises that all sacrifices and suffering will ultimately be worth it, in order to prevent female opposition . The wooden frame and velvet fabric symbolize the church pews where eisegesis takes root. Pearls are used in the bible pertaining to various topics including wisdom, the pearly gates of Heaven, women’s hair accessories, and the casting pearls before swine. The pearls in this piece illustrate the ways that female modesty, virtue, and worth are deceptively represented by high-control religions. For example, “Be ye clothed in modesty, adorn yourself  not with pearls in your hair…” is often shortened in order to critique women’s coverage demonize sexuality.; In actuality, the verse discusses humility, especially pertaining to wealth as a hinderance to inclusivity. The embroidered seafoam uses the established biblical symbolism of the effervescent and wicked nature of false teachings. The black lava provides a subtle implication of black sand; The black sand subverts the biblical symbolism referencing descendants as numerous as grains of sand, illustrating the heavy use of eisegesis for the roles of women in modern fundamental Christianity.
