This painting was designed during the artists’ May, 2025 pilgrimage on the Chichibu Temple Route in Japan. Chichibu 15, Shorin-ji has a springtime garden of peonies. A stone lantern symbolically lights the path for each pilgrim. The techniques of layering, scraping, and glazing oil paint imbues a mystical atmosphere into the work.

This painting was made with oil paint on yupo paper, a unique combination. Yupo is an artists’ paper made of recycled plastic. The piece was mounted on board using acid- free materials. The combination of oil on yupo allows for portions of the oil paint to be scraped, revealing base layers. It is framed with a natural wood gallery frame.
