This “Queen for a Day” was inspired by the 1945 TV show. Desperate housewives with sob stories were featured on the show and told their heart-wrenching tales. Then the audience voted to choose the Queen for a Day. I tried to style her in her clean up gear (apron and gingham and cleaning gloves) and kept in mind the mindset of society’s and TV’s expectations for housewives, even back then. Perfection in looks/beauty, raising a family, cleaning, cooking…. the list goes on! I think of families today who do it all and work outside of the home. I think there is a breaking point at some time for all of the expectations, then and now.

This sculpture is made from a low fire clay. I built her in 2 parts because of her size and weight and she fits together at the waist. I basically use a coil and slab method to build up the clay forms. She was fired multiple times because of her crown, which needed to be fired multiple times due to glaze failure. First firing was for bisque, next firing was a low fire gold (which turned greenish brown and dripped on her face) and underglaze on her body. After 3 days of hand sanding the dripped glaze off of her face I tried the expensive gold overglaze (firing #3) which did not turn out gold enough…. it was more of a bronze. Finally, I added gold leaf to her crown which requires no firing.
