Finding Wings – A Survivor’s Story

Elizabeth Foley

Finding Wings – A Survivors’s Story is sculpted from ceramic stoneware using slab building construction techniques.  It begins as separate pieces – a head/neck, a main body and over 40 individually sculpted and carved feathers.  The pieces are glazed and fired to over 2200 degrees.  After firing the body portion was permanently mounted to a metal stand and then the head neck was attached to the base using a marine grade epoxy.  Finally each feather was individually attached to the piece to create the final sculpture.

Finding Wings – A Survivor’s Story celebrates the strength and resilience of a Domestic Violence survivor.  Excerpts from a survivor’s story are carved into the feathers creating the texture of the finished piece. The way the words become muted and indistinct in the sculpting and glazing process reflect how survivor stories get muted in the world. The swan was chosen as the subject of the sculpture as it represents transformation.  The intention is to focus on the transformation of a survivor’s healing journey and their return to wholeness rather than the darkness of their experience.
