This portrait of the artist’s daughter, from a series of portraits documenting the pediatric cancer family’s experience, captures a moment from a pediatric oncology bed, where a 13-year-old girl stares down a relapse of Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a blood cancer that takes the lives of most patients who relapse. The artist’s series of pediatric cancer watercolor portraits presents poignant and tender moments of this young girl who fought cancer, relapsed, and fought cancer again before receiving a life-saving stem cell transplant using umbilical cord blood cells. In Staring Down Relapse, the artist blends figural realism and impressionism to capture the strength, focus, and resilience of a young woman faced with a second fight for her life against an aggressive cancer. The young girl faces cancer with resolve, determination, hope, and strength. The artist recounts the family’s journey through pediatric cancer in a 2019 memoir titled “No Match For Her.”
