“My creative process, led by an inner voice, has gained deep and profound significance, especially in this puppetry installation that honors civilian casualties and those who have suffered in the horrors of war, particularly the conflict in Ukraine. I believe this project will resonate emotionally with people of all ages. While it may bring joy to a toddler, it could bring an adult to tears.

My journey with sock puppets began with what I call Little Voice and a puppetry workshop. I went home and made ten sock puppets, but I felt that I should make more. When I reached around 350, that same voice whispered, “Ukraine,” and I felt chills.

This is an enormous project, with each puppet standing on a shelf within a 4 x 6 elaborate gold-framed panel. There are six panels in total. In addition, I plan to include a few thousand cyanotype prints in the final display. Each puppet symbolizes a civilian who lost their life in the Ukraine war—both adults and children.
