Marsh at Dusk (A Holy Rest)

Mary Cooper McDonough

The medium of collage allows me to create an alternate reality through my lens.  A perceived reality that has both emotion and substance; concentrated on the desire for the viewer to see blocks of color and abstracted shapes and textures. Memories and materials, past and present, influence design decision making.  I’m fascinated with color showing through and around cut paper, rice paper and other collage materials.

In fall of 2020, during the height of the Covid 19 crisis, I created a series of pieces inspired by the prayer of St. John Henry Newman; “Peace at Last”.  This artwork is a redo.  I scrapped the old one and recreated it in fall of 2023.  I wanted to focus on the lushness of the marsh, the quiet and loudness of the marsh, the many layers of textures and colors of the marsh.  It is a view of the marsh at Ocracoke, NC.  It is a place where my family has gone for a very long time.  When I look over the marsh, I think of beauty, the stillness, the marsh as a giant filter and I prayerfully consider God’s hand with a brush.
