The striped cloth is draped over a knee and suggests both the human form beneath as well as a mountain of deep gullies under a sky. The text,
conforming to the stripes, adds another dimension of complexity to the hidden figure. The text reads: My mother bragged that she never showed off pictures of her children when out on the town – dinner and a Broadway show – with my father and his client and wife. Invariably the wife pulled out her photos. My mother wanted to talk of more worldly things. I thought she wasn’t proud of us.
Dinner & a Show
Joan Lesikin
This long and narrow oil painting on linen combines my writing and imagery of striped cloth draped over a knee. The writing follows the stripes
to tell a story.
