Clearing the Jump is a collaged art quilt inspired by a photo taken at a horse event by a local photographer (with permission). I wanted to focus mostly on the rider’s face to try to portray her expression, her concentration, and at the same time, her excitement. I liked how the photographer shot only part of the horse and part of the rider. It was a challenge for me but I enjoyed the process from choosing the right fabrics down to the final thread painting.

My fabric collaged art quilts are designed with many small fabric pieces
that have been adhered to a base fabric. It is then layered onto
batting and a backing fabric at which point it is machine stitched in
an all over pattern. The machine stitching allows me to not
only hold the pieces in place but to thread paint adding highlights
and shadows. The completed art quilt is stretched onto gallery
canvas.
