This piece was inspired by a life drawing session. After her last pose the model put on her kimono and did a series of slow moving poses which allowed photos to be taken. The butterfly-like kimono sleeves immediately struck me and this piece, one of transformation came to my mind in its completion. The poses I chose for this piece went from contemplative to playful and energetic to one of freedom and joy. This piece is an exploration of movement, emotion and self expression. The abstract background with hints of butterflies lend an ethereal quality. This piece also reflects personal changes in my life. I always seek joy and freedom in my work and try to find silver linings, in this case gold leaf. This painting reminds me of the unattributed quote, if nothing ever changed there’d be no butterflies.”
