After the Party

Lori Solymosi

This piece is done with acrylics and charcoal , I use many layers including a variety of opacities, fixing and sealing between layers. I in places put down layers and create marks in the wet pain and in places scrape away paint or build up paint for a textural surface. I love the way some of the charcoal marks show through.

After the Party  was inspired by a direct painting from a live model. This pose was intriguing because of its contemplative nature and perhaps a slight sense of fatigue. I love when I have a long pose and the model relaxes and goes into her inner . world. I used my small study to create this studio work. I changed the outfit of the model to a red party dress in keeping with my desire to create a complimentary color scheme and juxtapose the vibrant foreground with the softer more subdued background. I wanted to keep the party decorations vague in order for the viewer to create their own narrative. Is she reflecting on the events of the evening, or perhaps resting here tired feet from dancing? I also purposely left the details of her face vague so her age is subjective as well. Although she is alone in this painting, the viewer is up close . I really want the viewer to interact with this girl. This collaboration is one of the reasons I enjoy working from life models. The model collaborates with the artist , the artist with the model and the viewer with the art thus creating something new on a experiential level.
