I have been exploring crowns and their meanings. They can promote power, ceremony, beauty and political power. Taking Flight expresses a more natural beauty to me, one in which earthiness, in a quiet and subtle way, reigns over all.
Taking Flight
Jane Couch-Osmelowski
The base of this crown was thrown on the wheel with a white clay. Feathers gathered over time were dipped in a white slip and added to the crown. Once bisque fired, the fragile feathers and crown were painted with red clay (mud) gathered from the backyard and underglazes. Additional found feathers were added.
